Rose report
It’s one of those jobs that should be done by now, but I didn’t get to until yesterday: tidying up the rose bed.
This involves clearing out all the fir cones and needles and then pulling up all the grass and weeds that have sprouted.
Then, of course, better late than never (I hope) adding compost. I am pleased to say there is at least one bud on most of the bushes.
Elsewhere in the garden…
The hydrangea seems to have recovered from being feasted on by a deer family last year. No sign however of any flowers beginning to form. I now have a sneaking suspicion that it might have needed some food. Must check with Rhodo Dave. (Yes, I know it’s not a rhodo, but he probably knows.)
The strawberry bed is coming along nicely. Not so much the other berry bushes. If I’m lucky I’ll get three raspberries from the only bush with flowers and nada from other raspberries, blueberries or gooseberry. Do I throw good money after bad and invest in more berry bushes? Or do I just admit defeat? Tough call.
On a brighter note…
The first cherry tomato has appeared and there are lots of flowers on this and the other two plants.
The two-year-old packet of bean seeds have done their job. Not so much the brand new packet of pea seeds, but they’re also coming along. No sign so far of the sunflower seeds planted in the middle sprouting. Methinks the birds may have got to them.
If I am going to do anything with the rest of the raised bed I really should get on it. Maybe tomorrow. Too sore from yesterday’s squatting to do any more today.
