So, yesterday it was a week since I stepped down from the board of the local theatre company. The plan was to take some time off.

Two days after the AGM, auditions were held for a November production of 7 STORIES. The turn out was very good, no doubt because it is being performed as a staged reading. Quite a few people, knowing they would not have to memorise lines, came out for the first time. Fantastic.

Had coffee with Wendy, the director, on Friday. She was thrilled with the auditions, although there were a couple of roles that needed to be doubled up. And one of the women is going to be away for a couple of weeks next month. Told her I would be happy to fill in then if she wanted. She wanted. She also happily accepted my offer to go to yesterday’s first readthrough to fill in for someone who thought her granddaughter’s wedding was more important. (Honestly, people and their bloody families. Bane of my existence when I was directing pantos.)

Well, guess what? The readthrough reminded me what a wonderfully funny play this is. And it turned out one of the doubled-up roles was quite juicy. So, what did I do when the reading was finished? Yes, of course, I told the director that if she wanted someone other than the woman playing Charlotte to play Nurse Wilson, I would be up for it. Oh and, without consulting him (because we had actually discussed it a while ago), I said there was a good chance, given that there were no lines to learn, that my guy would be willing to tackle the other doubled up role (Al). Which, when asked, it turned out he is.

So, now we’re going from me taking some time off to both of us being in a play.

Oh, well. It will be fun.

Didn’t expect your pause to last that long, TBH 🙂
