Water falls

February 4, 2024

For part of the year there is a lovely waterfall on the island. Right now, what with all the rain we’ve had and all that melted snow, it really is quite something. There is a trail that crosses the point where it starts to tumble down a steep hill.

There is another trail, much lower down, that crosses it just before the water tumbles into the sea. There is also a trail that links the two, although it’s thirty or forty feet from the actual waterfall. If you want to be beside the water as it flows down the hill there is some bush whacking involved. Which is, of course, what Joe and Georgie and I did the other day.

There are ferns, salal, branches and roots to contend with, not to mention everything, including the moss, being slippery from the recent rain. No surprise that I lost my footing and had a couple of falls – once onto my knees, once onto my ass. Only reason I minded was that I’d only just washed my jeans.

Georgie, needless to say, had no problem with her footing.

At one point it was necessary to balance on top of a log in order to stay close to the water.

Oh, ha, ha. Not that one. This one.

We’re not crazy.

What is crazy is some of the trees beside the water fall. Like this one.

Or this one.

It’s annoying that WordPress won’t let me include video, so I can’t share any of the clips including wonderful sound of all that water flowing. I love that sound. Said so to Joe, who told me it is also one of his favourite sounds.

All the way to the bottom, where the water pounds into the sea.

Again, annoying that I can’t imbed video, because it was absolutely roaring at this point.

As we made our way along the edge back to the lower trail, we spot this.

Really does look like a big old pile of bird shit. Glance further up the tree.

Oh, my. Certainly seems this could be someone’s favourite poo perch.

And then, of course, it was time to clamber back up to the upper trail.

The only problem with following the waterfall down (other than slipping, falling and getting green moss stains on the knees and ass of your newly washed jeans) is that afterwards you have to climb the very steep hill back up. They really could do with a bench or two along the way. Or a funicular.

Wow. That’s lovely. What a gorgeous sight. Thanks for sharing the pictures xoxo. And good for you for slogging your way through it all. Your log pictures (LOL) reminded me of a time in the rainforest on the Brooks Peninsula (north of Tofino) with Garth Lenz. We actually did have to cross a slippery log over a raging stream. I was tempted to crawl, but managed to keep my footing and make the crossing. Turned to watch Garth dance across it like a mountain goat, while loaded with camera gear, tripod, and a massive back-pack. Wowza. Some people. But hey – you’re making the trek! Some folks our age can barely make it to the bathroom, so good on you!

BTW – keep the plog posts coming!
