A blue visitor

September 7, 2023

Even though I haven’t seen a single Stellar’s Jay so far this year, I decided a few days ago to put some peanuts in the feeder, just in case that’s what they’d been awaiting. The only taker was this little guy.

Needless to say, he didn’t have any luck. Otherwise nothing. Until yesterday.

I was sitting here at the computer when I heard that familiar and insistent “ack, ack” call, followed by some crashing in the diningroom.

Went to investigate and there was a jay trying to crash his way through the back window.

Didn’t get a picture at the time, being somewhat preoccupied, but this is the window.

Obviously he was never going to get out that way and he’d forgotten where the open door was, so I went over to the side window.

Moved the plants and the lamp and opened it all the way, then made my way towards the back window to get him to shift and he figured out the new exit pretty quickly.

I thought this was going to be the beginning of regular morning visitors, but it seems I was wrong. Got up this morning to find peanuts still in the feeder and no sign of impatient blue birds waiting for me to fill it. Perhaps he was so traumatised by head banging the rear window that he decided this place wasn’t safe and has not brought pals round. I hope not. I’ve been missing those guys.

In other news about the missing, Joe and Georgie got back from their Winnipeg summer the other night. Before he left Joe gave me his spare house and mail box keys and I have been delivering his post in his absence.

When I did this for the last time I also left a little welcome home message.

I knew from a text received earlier in the day that he was expecting to get home about 10pm, so wasn’t surprised to see a call from his mobile around that time.

“You’re home!” I said.

“Um,” he said, “sort of.”

Oh, yes? Turns out for some reason his house key wasn’t on the same key chain as his car key and he couldn’t find it. So, yes, he was at his home, but unable to get into his home. Good thing he’d given me his spare key.

Which meant not only did I get to see him shortly afterwards, but I also got to see Georgie, who, bless her, was very excited to see me.

She’s recovered well from her surgery, but it will still be some time before she’s ready for long walks again. (And when she is, there will be no more ball hurling.) Still, short walks would be better than the almost no walks I’ve had for months now.

Very few stellars jays around here, as well. I can hear them but they seem elusive. Very good news that Joe and Georgie are home!!
