A day late

February 16, 2026

We were studiously ignoring it, the Hallmark holiday last weekend. No cards, no roses, no chocolates. (Or fluffy pink bears?)

My annual Facebook post

We almost made it. Then I went over to my friend Jean’s to meet Saffron, the lovely, young, pregnant cat she is currently fostering. (Maisie was a previous lovely, young, pregnant cat fostered by Jean.) She (Jean, not Saffron) had been baking and insisted I save her from herself by taking some cookies away.

Oh, well. They are very yummy.

Our thing (along with many others on the island) was not on Saturday, which was just any other day as far as we were concerned. Our thing was yesterday.

We had tickets to see award winning jazz pianist and vocalist Champian Fulton and Klas Lindquist yesterday afternoon. The show was fantastic. This is just one of the numbers they performed.

Between gigs in Vancouver on Saturday and San Francisco on Tuesday, they turned up here. As I’ve said before, we don’t half punch above our weight.

And then dinner at our favourite restaurant (which every big city visitor I’ve ever had cannot believe how lucky we are to have). Sablefish special. Never had sablefish before. Yummers!

Beautiful music, beautiful meal and none of it on February 14th. (Okay, there were the cookies.) I might pop in to the grocery store this afternoon to see if any of the wildly overpriced roses are now on sale. They regularly have been in the past.
