A banker to the rescue?

January 14, 2025

I’ve just done something I had no idea yesterday I was going to do today. I registered as a Liberal. Have I ever voted Liberal in a Canadian election? No, I have not. Am I planning to vote Liberal in the next federal election – in October at the latest or in the spring after Pee Pee forces a vote of non-confidence? No, I am not.

So, why did I register as a Liberal? Because last night I watched this. (If you’re a Canadian and haven’t seen the interview already, do watch it.)

Of course I know that Mark Carney used to be the Governor of the Bank of Canada, before being appointed the Governor of the Bank of England. What I did not know is that he is so personable.

And, as I watched the interview, it struck me: Bloody hell, this guy, this very personable guy, this (as he made a point of calling himself) “outsider” could actually stop Pee Pee in his tracks. He could authoritatively (and with humour) make mincemeat of the prick and his populist shit.

And thus this morning I went online and registered as a Liberal so I can vote for Carney in the leadership race. I will get a billion emails (used an old email address) and texts (should have used old mobile number, oh, well), but I can ignore these.

This isn’t my first time round. Back around 2013 I registered as a Liberal so I could vote for Joyce Murray, the only candidate who was talking any sense. She never stood a chance, but I figured if enough people voted for her the Liberal Party might notice that there was considerable support for her point of view.

Do I want another Liberal government? Well, it would be preferable to Prime Minister Pee Pee, but that’s about all I can say. What I would really like is an NDP government led by someone like Jack Layton (which Jagmeet Singh most definitely is not), but that ain’t gonna happen.

As I said, I won’t be voting for the Liberal candidate. I might consider it if I lived in a riding where a Liberal had a chance of winning, but I don’t. There were Reform MPs in the 1990s and a Green MP a few years ago, but the riding is most often NDP. The Liberals don’t get a look in here. It’s up to the rest of the country.

Fingers crossed.

Funny thing. Was just thinking that I needed to do this as well. Just this morning as I was brushing my teeth. Great minds think alike alike?

Interesting idea! Might have to do the same. Oddly enough, I was with a small gathering of friends for a potluck on Sunday and told one that I’d be happy with Mark Carney as Lib leader. He talks a good game on climate, even if I wouldn’t count on him (or the gov) to walk the walk, and he kept us out of the subprime fiasco. Then Monday – I saw the Daily Show interview. And yes, he’d make mincemeat of pee-pee in a debate. Not sure the ‘outsider’ positioning will work (he is such a party establishment guy), but it’s a good pitch.
