Seven days

November 12, 2024

I’m a news junkie (no surprise as I used to be a journalist) and a political junkie. When I get up in the morning, I make myself a cappuccino and take it back to bed to check the news online. When I turn my television on, the last channel I watched is either Al Jazeera or MSNBC.

Well, not at the moment. I’ve gone cold turkey. The last time I read, watched or listened to any news was at 10pm last Tuesday.

I’ve also been steering clear of Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart and John Oliver for a week. I simply can’t watch their pain at the death of sanity and optimism. I just can’t.

I know I can’t keep closing my eyes, sticking my fingers in my ears and singing “la, la, la” forever. But I swore last Tuesday that I’d stay away from the news for a fortnight. One week to go.

I got a bit twitchy last night. Monday night. When was the last time my Monday evening did not include Rachel Maddow? No idea.

Some bits of news seeps in from the Facebook posts of friends. I quickly scroll down.

It’s just too awful to contemplate. Not yet.

Courage, my sisters south of the border. Somehow you will survive.

Look at this picture instead of contemplating the future.

La, la, la.
