Answering the question
Kamala Harris’s first sit down interview since becoming the Democratic nominee yesterday. First question, not surprisingly, was what she would do on day one of her presidency.
Her answer involved a lot of waffle about her proposed “opportunity economy”. Blah, blah, blah. Oh, hang on, there was one concrete thing in there: extend the child tax credit nationally. Okay, that’s good. It does help lift a lot of children out of poverty. That was specific.
Still, it wasn’t the answer I would have liked to hear – not that she could have given that answer even if she wanted to do so. What would I have liked her to say in answer to the day one question? It would have gone something like this.
“Well, Dana, that depends entirely on the US electorate. If, in addition to electing Tim and me to the White House, voters give us a majority in the Senate and the House of Representatives, on day one I would start the ball rolling on passing legislation that would restore a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body.”
Obviously Harris got the famous Carville memo: “It’s the economy, stupid.” The election mantra since 1992. Is it? Yes, I suppose that is the lead you need to use for the majority of people. But, if the mid-terms delivered one consistent message, it was this: “It’s abortion, stupid.”
The answer to the economy is straightforward: “The Wankmaggot will deliver yet more tax cuts for billionaires and corporations. I, on the other hand, will increase taxes on them and use the money raised to provide opportunities for every day Americans to get ahead. If you want more information about our plans go to kamalaharris.com.” (Oops, I just did. It’s a policy free zone. Maybe leave that out of the answer.)
Don’t get me wrong. Kamala Harris is my gal. I was all in for her back in 2019. I correctly predicted she would be chosen as Biden’s running mate. She is, as I knew she would be, a great candidate. And I bloody love Tim Walz. I also loved her response to this stupid question.
Actually, as a friend pointed out after the interview, most of the questions Harris and Walz were asked were, like the one above, based on baseless Wankmaggot allegations. What was up with that, CNN?
At their convention last week, the Democrats boldly reclaimed the word freedom, and, as summed up in this New Yorker article, delivered a definition with which the majority of US citizens would agree. It included the freedom to love who you love, freedom to vote, freedom from fear of gun violence and freedom to decide for yourself when and if you want to reproduce.
I just wish I’d heard more about that last night.
