And now for something completely different
This wasn’t an official sign.
It’s an image I created in March 2020, when it became clear that Joe Biden was going to be Democratic candidate and I predicted he would choose Kamala Harris as his running mate – long before it was officially announced. There was a slew of reasons for him to pick her – an appeal to women voters, to people of colour, to younger voters. But he wasn’t just picking a 2020 running mate. He was also picking his successor.
It was obvious to me (and, as I’ve said before, should have been to anyone with half a brain) that Biden and Harris had a deal. At some point he would step down while still in office and she would become President of the United States. Maybe it was supposed to be in 2023, so she’d have a year and a half in the job to run on in 2024. Maybe he backed out of that plan when it became clear the Republicans really had been taken over by the cult of the Wankmaggot, feeling that he was the only person who could beat him. Maybe the deal was always to get him back into the Oval Office after this year’s election before he stepped down. Whatever it was, they had a deal.
Joe Biden did not want to withdraw from the race this year. But a guy can only survive so many stabs in the back. Yesterday he announced he was withdrawing his candidacy and offered his wholehearted endorsement of his Vice-President as the person who should take the reins.
Much was said yesterday by many – including Obama – about the extraordinary legacy Biden leaves behind and the courage and patriotism it took for him to make this decision.
And it was satisfying to see so much support coalesce so quickly around Kamala Harris. Donations, many of them small ones from average folks, poured in. Democratic governors, senators and members of the house of representatives were falling over themselves to endorse her. States that had voted overwhelmingly for Biden in the primaries pledged their delegates to her. (Much was also made of Obama’s failure to endorse her, but that is not what the former President does. Unlike the Wankmaggot who can’t, Obama keeps his trap shut until there is an actual nominee. In 2020 he did not publicly endorse his former Vice-President until Biden had secured the nomination. Assuming Harris does become the nominee, you can also assume that both Barack and Michelle will be stumping for her like crazy.)
Nancy Pelosi is said to have made it clear she did not want a coronation. Now Pelosi is a canny old bird, but on this she is wrong. There is no time to faff around and let things be decided a month from now at the convention in Chicago. The Democratic chattering class who killed the king need to shut up, get their butts 100% behind the queen and go, go, go.
So far the only person who’s made any noise about challenging Harris is the turncoat Joe Manchin, who should just go fuck himself. That didn’t last long. Rumour (and that’s all I’ve got to go on) is that his attempt to re-register as a Democrat, which he would have to do in order to get his name in the hat, was rejected. I hope that rumour is true.
I was particularly delighted yesterday when it broke that a PAC formed by Nikki Haley supporters after she dropped out of the Republican race had pledged its money and support to Harris. It was already “Haley Voters for Biden”, so, unlike their candidate, who bent the knee at the Republican convention, they were already on the right page. It was easy to change “Biden” to “Harris”, which they’ve already done. An opportunity for Haley to regain a shred of the dignity she threw away at the RNC? Yes, but I doubt she’ll take it.
And how are the actual voters reacting? Time will tell, but some aren’t waiting for their new lawns signs to arrive.
STOP PRESS: Events have overtaken me. Pelosi has just endorsed Harris, proving she is still very much a canny old bird.
