Crazy year

May 28, 2024

Have I mentioned what a crazy (in a good way) year it is for rhododendrons?

This is always the first one to bloom.

I thought I’d taken a pic of it in full flower, but apparently I didn’t. It was amazing. I’ve never seen so many flowers on it before.

Now those flowers are faded and falling.

Sad, but not to worry. As these flowers are falling, these are opening.

Again, I’ve never seen so many flowers on this bush.

Oh, and what’s this?

This is one of the first two rhododendrons I planted at the back of the house years ago after I found out deer don’t eat rhodos. I cannot remember the last time it produced a single flower. I’d long since forgotten what colour the flowers were. Red, it seems. There may not be as many flowers as the other two, but the fact that there are any at all is quite something.

Just wish it was warm enough to sit out on the deck and enjoy them, but Juneuary came early this year. Brr.

Glad to hear some of your garden is rewarding you. I’m trying to make a bigger effort with my veg garden this year to see if I can’t actually get some crops worth the effort. Have invested in better soil and have one new raised bed. For the rest, it’s an endless task of thinning. I have long established tracts of days lilies that are tough to shift.

Just now, the poppies, peonies and irises are done—most beaten to an early death by heavy rains.
