Metal works

May 18, 2024

Last weekend, after I discovered my two plastic watering “cans” had both sprung leaks, I complained about it on Facebook. A friend commented that she’d had the same problem, solved by the island hardware store, which ordered her a galvanised metal one. When they placed the order for her, they also ordered half a dozen to sell. My friend was absolutely delighted with hers and posted a photo of it. She also said that by the next day the six others they’d ordered and put out for sale were all gone. I went in a couple of days later to make the same request. The bloke behind the counter was convinced they already had some, but when he went outside they were, of course, gone. So, in addition to ordering one for me, he ordered six more for the store. Picked mine up yesterday. There were still six outside. I wonder how many will be left today?

For now, it certainly is shiny. And it definitely holds more water than the others did.

Only drawback is that, unlike the plastic ones, you cannot unscrew the “shower” fixture. So, as I’ve just discovered, when you’re trying to water window boxes, probably a fifth (or more) of the water goes over the edges on the ground.

Oh, well. Small price to pay.

Speaking of things made of metal…

Georgie, who managed to lose her old one, has a new dog tag. And it looks just like her.

In fact, it is her. Joe contacted an artist on the island who works with metal and will turn his hand to pretty much anything, who was happy to take a commission for a dog tag and able to turn a photo of Georgie into an image engraved on metal.

Adorable or what?

Oh, and her lost tag was plastic, so it seems we’re both doing our bit.

PS Ha, ha. Just popped down to the village and went past the hardware store. All the remaining watering cans were gone.
