Leaks and weeds

May 13, 2024

Second morning of coffee on the deck. It really is a lovely way to start the day. Birds at the feeder dangling from the umbrella and, bonus, I managed to stay still long enough for a hummingbird to stop by for some nectar.

Didn’t make it down to the garden proper yesterday. The question of where to even begin is rather overwhelming. But work was done out back.

Annoying discovery of the day: Decided I should use up some of the water in the rain barrel/garbage can before shifting it somewhere less highly visible. Not easy to do when it turned out that both my watering “cans” have cracked at the bottom and are leaking.

Guess there was water in them during last winter’s deep freeze. And of course neither of them have a recyclable triangle on the bottom. Sigh.

Tipped out the contents of rain garbage can, then spent half an hour pulling up the huge, spiky weed that had grown behind the generator to relocate the “barrel”.

Removal of said huge weed revealed a put-to-one-side-and-forgotten planter, so a home found for the excess lobelia.

Much more weeding to be done both out back and in the garden, but didn’t get overly ambitious, deciding instead to focus on the pots of herbs by the back door, many of which had baby maple trees coming up. (There is one maple tree on my property, in amongst the many cedars and firs. You can’t even see it and only know it’s there in the autumn when the leaves fall everywhere.)

Break for a cup of tea and then it’s time to get the cushions on the bench at the back.

This used to be Stella’s favourite place in the summer.

I wonder how long it will take Maisie to discover and claim it?
