Timing

February 10, 2024

They say timing is everything. That’s certainly true with Maisie. Unfortunately, hers sucks.

Most days I spend hours sitting at the computer. Most evenings I spend hours sitting on the sofa.

I would love it if Maisie wanted to climb up on me and snuggle in the evening. I would happily cuddle and stroke her and listen to her purr for hours. But, no, that is not when Maisie wants to do this.

When I’m at the computer she gets up on the two-drawer filing cabinet beside the desk and stares at me. This is when she wants to cuddle. I am supposed to pick her up, lift her so her front paws and chin are on my shoulder and pat her for as long as she wants, which is often quite a long time.

Not easy to get a photo when she’s pretty much in my face, but here she is.

Interesting new development a couple of days ago when she decided to add ear nibbles to her show of daytime affection. Hasn’t happened since and I am hoping this was a one off.

If I don’t pick her up, if I try to ignore her because I really am right in the middle of something I’m doing on the computer, she just jumps on my shoulder and stretches out across both shoulders and the back of my neck.

As we go through this now daily ritual, I stroke her and ask why. Why? Why? Why?

Why can’t she do this in the evening when I’m on the sofa?

No, in the evening she prefers being in the cat chair or on the back of the sofa behind me. If I cannot resist picking her up in the evening for a cuddle (which I can’t), she will start to purr and she’ll seem quite content, but that only lasts a minute or two.

Maisie, Maisie, Maise. I’d give you all the attention and affection you could possibly want in the evening. Why, oh why does it have to be during the day?

Silly me. What am I saying? She’s a cat.
