An afternoon at the theatre

November 18, 2023

The last time I went to the theatre as an audience member was August 2021 in London. Twenty quid for front row seats to see the awesome play The Southbury Child.

As if a fabulous play wasn’t enough, we walked out of the theatre to this view.

One of many wonderful days in London last year.

Since then I have: directed a panto, prompted a play, directed and acted (something I will never do again) in a one-act play I also wrote, and, most recently, acted in a full-length play.

This afternoon, for the first time since London last year, I am going to an actual theatre to see a play, one that has absolutely nothing to do with me.

I am getting on the ferry and going to town to see O Christmas Tea, described as a must see for “fans of Monty Python and Dr. Seuss”. Well, that would be me.

When a friend sent me the link and asked me if I wanted to go, I hesitated when I saw how much the tickets were, then realised, thanks to another very kind friend sending me some birthday money, I could actually afford it.

Another friend on the island, when approached to see if she was also interested, said she would absolutely love to, but she simply wasn’t ready to be part of a large, unmasked audience. Crap. Why hadn’t I thought of that? (I think I might have been the only person wearing a mask in the theatre in London last summer.) Oh, well, I’d promised to go and, even if most people aren’t wearing masks, I can.

Turns out this isn’t the first time this production has been in town. At the Bad Girls Book Club last night someone who saw it a couple of years ago said it was absolutely hilarious.

So, I’ll go, I’ll mask, I’ll laugh and hopefully I won’t come home with Covid.
