Imagine this

November 13, 2023

There are two land routes into the Gaza strip – one from Israel, closed possibly forever, one from Egypt, barely open for aid to get in.

But there is also the Mediterranean Sea.

Imagine Cyprus (unlikely, but close) or Turkey (also unlikely) or Greece (ditto) or even Malta (further away, but what the hell has Malta got to lose?) saying “bring the aid here”. Imagine ships loading up with vital humanitarian aid – food, medicine, generator fuel and people who know how and are equipped with the tools to fix infrastructure. A flotilla of aid.

Now imagine Jimmy Carter (I have no idea if he can travel, but he’s the only former US president I can imagine doing it) getting on a plane to Cyprus or Turkey or Rhodes or Malta and boarding the lead ship. Or Bill Clinton, who did once get credit (and a Nobel nomination) for playing a role in getting baby steps made towards a two state solution and might, maybe, just fancy justifying his existence. Or Barack Obama, who was barely inaugurated before winning a Nobel Peace Prize simply for not being George Dubya Bush. This might prick his conscience.

There’s probably no way the aid could be unloaded from cargo ships in Gaza’s only port. I’m pretty sure the Israeli military has already bombed the shit out of that. So, a lot of ferrying, but the lead ship could get pretty damn close to the shore.

Would Benjamin Netanyahu actually order the bombing of that lead ship? I’m betting, although I could be wrong, that he would not.

THAT is what it would take. It could actually be done and it really wouldn’t take that long. The aid is ready to go. It just can’t get in.

It won’t be done. But imagine if it was. Imagine if the world just said NO?
